David slammed the box shut, the sound echoing in his small apartment. The draft resignation, from his mother, from a career she supposedly loved, felt like a slap in the face. He’d found it while cleaning out her apartment, after the move.

He paced the length of his living room, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. The letter expressed a longing for creative freedom. He felt a deep ache within him, a kind of internal paralysis. He was a lawyer, just like his mother had wanted him to be, and he was completely and utterly…empty.

He stared out the window at the city lights. He felt the world closing in, shrinking with every passing day. He knew, with a certainty that settled in his bones, that he needed to change his life. Immediately.
