“Another voicemail?” she heard herself ask, her voice flat, devoid of emotion. The news had turned her stomach, a half-brother she had never known about. Now her phone was flooded with messages from the lawyer, from the man’s family. The walls of her apartment seemed to close in, compressing her. She found herself staring out the window, watching the passersby on the street, each one a universe she would never know. The world outside, a vast and vibrant tapestry, was something she couldn’t seem to touch.
