“No, I don’t understand.” Sarah’s voice was clipped, her tone a brittle, almost angry, monotone. She hung up the phone. She felt a burning sensation in her throat. She clenched her jaw, the muscles tight.

She was meant to be celebrating. Instead, she was staring at the half-decorated living room, a garland of balloons lying discarded on the floor. Her hands started to tremble, a visible shake that she couldn't control. She felt hollow.

She snapped. Tears streamed down her face. She sank into the nearest chair, letting the sobs rack her body. The party was gone, with no explanation, with no reason. She was left alone with her disappointment.
