The sun beat down on David’s back, but he didn’t feel the warmth. He sat on the crumbling foundation of the old garage, the remnants of a life stripped bare. He’d come alone, refusing to bring his wife or children. He didn't want any witnesses.

He ran his hand along the rough concrete. The air was thick with the scent of pine and burning wood. The house was gone, reduced to a pile of debris. His heart felt heavy, weighed down by the absence. He felt no peace.

He remembered the day he'd left home, the fight with his father. He regretted it, now. He wanted to go home again, but he realized it was impossible.
