Lila watched the demolition from the opposite side of the street, her fingers worrying at the frayed edge of her jeans. She felt a sense of unreality wash over her. It was as if she was watching someone else’s life, not her own.

The house was a shell of its former self, its windows gaping like empty sockets. She thought of her mother, who was also gone, their shared laughter. The memory brought a familiar sting to her eyes.

She bit her lip, holding back the tears. It was all gone. There was nothing left. The air was thick with dust, coating everything in a fine layer of grey. She turned and walked away.
