He kicked a pebble across the cracked pavement, watching it disappear into a grimy puddle. The autumn air nipped at his exposed skin, but he barely registered it. He was supposed to be cleaning out the garage, a chore he’d been putting off for weeks. Now, here he was, confronted with the ghosts of his childhood. He had opened a box of his father’s old things and felt a strange heaviness settle over him.

Dust motes danced in the lone ray of sunlight that pierced the gloom. He rummaged through the contents, his fingers brushing against forgotten trinkets and faded photographs. Then, he found it: a neatly folded piece of paper, typed on stationary embossed with his father’s old company logo.

It was a letter of resignation. Dated from a time before he was born. He read the words, the dry legal language of his father's exit from the company. It spoke of professional disagreements. Of unmet potential. A door closed, a life rerouted. He crumpled the letter in his fist, a knot forming in his stomach. What had driven his father to abandon the path he'd chosen? He couldn't shake the feeling of being trapped in a maze without a map.
