The coffee tasted bitter, just like everything else. Clara slumped at the kitchen table, the early morning light struggling to penetrate the drawn curtains. She hadn't slept well, plagued by the familiar anxieties that always seemed to surface in the quiet hours. Today, she was helping her grandmother clear out her late grandfather’s office.

She reached for the overflowing box of old files. Her hand brushed against a thin envelope, tucked beneath a stack of invoices. It was addressed to the university, with her grandfather's name and title. Her pulse quickened as she pulled it out.

The typed letter, yellowed and fragile, detailed her grandfather’s resignation from his professorship. It spoke of disillusionment, a yearning for something more. The carefully chosen words seemed hollow, a facade for deeper emotions. Clara felt a strange disconnect, as if the man she knew was a stranger. She bit her lip, the taste of metal filling her mouth. The letter felt like a betrayal.
