He kicked a pebble across the cracked pavement, the sound echoing in the deserted park. The sky was a bruised purple, reflecting the mood that had settled over him like a shroud. He'd been expecting a bill, or a junk mail flyer, but the crisp white envelope felt different. It was addressed to him in neat, precise lettering. He didn't recognize the return address.

Inside, a single page, filled with carefully chosen words. His brother. It was a confession about something from their childhood. Something he’d long buried, a wound he thought had healed. A hot wave of anger flooded him, so intense he could feel his hands clench. He wadded the letter up, tossing it into the trash can.
