The coffee shop was too loud, too bright, filled with the cheerful chatter she actively avoided. She stared out the window, watching the city blur in the morning haze. A man had slipped a letter under the door of her apartment. Anonymous. Unexpected. It weighed heavily in her hand.

Her eyes scanned the script, the familiar flow of the penmanship felt like a gut punch. From David. The old flame. His clumsy, heartfelt admission about the way he'd treated her. She felt a cold tightness in her chest, a feeling of being pushed to the point of breaking. She closed her eyes, imagining the words he could have written, knowing them by heart. She carefully folded the letter back up and dropped it into her bag, right next to the shopping list.
