The afternoon sun streamed through the dusty window of the antique shop, illuminating the clutter. He was supposed to be cataloging the new arrivals, but he found himself staring at the letter. It felt heavier than it should, the words like a stone in his gut. A manila envelope, addressed in a shaky hand.

He knew the sender. His former business partner. An explanation for the fraud that had ruined him. An apology for the betrayal that had cost him everything. He tore the letter in half. Then into quarters. He watched the pieces fall to the floor.
