The world was too loud, too bright. He'd just wanted quiet. He stood by the kitchen window, watching the leaves rustle, the world's colours somehow too vivid.

A hesitant knock echoed through the door, disrupting the silence. He opened the door, a scowl etched on his face. It was Mr. Davies from next door, his usual overly enthusiastic self.

"Good afternoon, Liam!" Mr. Davies beamed. "I was thinking of maybe, perhaps, planting some vegetables this year. Would it be alright if I used a small portion of your backyard?"

His chest tightened. He wanted to scream, to lash out. Instead, he just stared.
