Gemotions

The announcement was made during the weekly team meeting. “We’re pleased to introduce our new Head of Marketing, and she’ll be shadowing David for the next two weeks.” My name was David, and my blood ran cold. My ears began to ring. I hadn't known this was coming, not in this way. I had anticipated a change, but certainly not this abrupt.

I watched, numb, as the new hire stood and gave a short, polished speech. Her smile was practiced, her voice clear and strong. The other team members clapped enthusiastically. I found my hands were clenched into fists, the nails digging into my palms.

After the meeting, I excused myself to the restroom, and stared into the mirror. My face was pale, my eyes wide and haunted. What was I supposed to say? What was I supposed to do?
