He stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It said, "Please begin training your replacement, effective immediately." He read it again. And again. His chest felt constricted. His breathing became shallow. He had never been fired before, never been in this situation.

He stood and paced his small cubicle, a frantic energy coursing through him. He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it. This wasn't how he envisioned his career path. He had a mortgage, bills, a life. He sat back down and tried to compose himself.

He stared at his computer screen, willing himself to focus. The screen seemed to flicker, and the world began to spin. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them again. The email was still there.
