The meeting was short and to the point. “John, meet Emily. She’ll be taking over your client accounts.” His name was John, and his mind was a blank slate. He felt a sudden chill, despite the room's stuffiness.

Emily extended her hand, her smile friendly. "I'm excited to learn from you," she said. John's response was a mumbled greeting. He found himself staring at his shoes, unable to meet her gaze.

Later, he walked to the breakroom and poured himself a cup of coffee. He was usually a tea drinker. He sloshed the bitter liquid, and stared out the window. The world seemed to have changed in an instant.
