The server’s words hung in the air, heavy and blunt as a physical blow. “I’m sorry, but we’re closing at the end of the month.” The words felt like a direct hit. He’d just ordered his favourite dish – chicken parmigiana. His fork froze mid-air. He looked around the bustling, lively restaurant, suddenly seeing it through a different lens. He felt a sudden, unwelcome wave of sadness. The cheerful chatter of the other patrons seemed distant, unreal. The taste of the wine on his tongue had turned sour.
