Gemotions

He stared at it. The card. Brightly colored, with a cartoon cat wearing a party hat. It was the only thing that wasn't a bill or an advert in his mailbox. It was addressed to him, in neat, unfamiliar handwriting. He didn't know anyone who would send him a card like this.

A sudden hollowness settled in his stomach. He wasn't particularly sentimental, but still. He opened it carefully. Inside, a simple message: "Enjoy your special day!" He blinked.

He glanced around the hallway of his apartment building. Empty. He felt a sudden, inexplicable… *tug*. A desire to know. He ran a hand over his face. He felt off-kilter, like something was askew.

He wanted to throw the card away, but he didn't. He closed the door of his apartment, retreating into the dim interior. The card remained in his grasp.
