Rain lashed against the windows, a dreary counterpoint to the warmth of the living room. Leo was engrossed in a particularly thrilling chapter of his book when a wet, shaggy head nudged the screen door. He almost jumped out of his skin.

He blinked, heart hammering against his ribs. The Golden Retriever from next door, again? His neighbor, Mrs. Gable, swore he was a gentle giant. Leo suspected the giant was a master escape artist.

He stammered, “Well, hello there, fella.” He moved slowly, wondering how many times he had to return this dog.
