The announcement came via the company-wide Slack channel. Liam, engrossed in a coding project, saw the notification pop up. He paused his work, his fingers still hovering over the keyboard.

He scrolled through the message, his jaw tightening with each passing sentence. He felt a sudden heat rise in his cheeks. He leaned back in his chair, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape.

He abruptly stood up, pushing his chair away from the desk. He walked to the window, staring out at the cityscape, struggling to process the news. The world outside seemed to spin, and he felt a knot of distress tighten in his gut.
