Michael stared at the notice, his jaw slack. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, leaving it standing on end. He hadn't been expecting this. The monthly rent had always been paid, even if it meant skipping a dinner or two.

A wave of heat washed over him, followed by a sudden chill. He blinked, trying to clear his vision. The small, cramped apartment seemed to shrink around him, the walls pressing in.

"This can't be real," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. He dropped the notice onto the cluttered coffee table, the paper landing precariously on a stack of unpaid bills. He felt a dizzying sensation, like he’d just stepped off a roller coaster.
