Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the turmoil brewing inside David. He’d just finished making a cup of coffee. The steaming mug slipped in his grasp, and he almost dropped it. The notice in his other hand seemed to blur.

His mouth fell open, and he sat down abruptly on the kitchen chair, the sudden movement nearly knocking him off balance. This was entirely unanticipated.

He rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand, trying to shake off the disbelief. The aroma of coffee, usually a source of comfort, now felt cloying and irritating. He felt a tightening in his chest, as if someone had just punched him.
