It was the type of day when the sunlight seemed to mock the sadness. Emily sat on the floor, surrounded by piles of her grandmother's belongings. She unearthed a small, velvet-lined box. Inside, not jewelry, but a single, folded sheet of paper. Her grandmother, always composed and elegant, had written a letter. The words hit her with the force of a physical blow: "Draft – Resignation from the Opera House.”

She ran a hand through her hair, a sense of unreality washing over her. Her grandmother, the woman who had lived for music, who had sung on that very stage...wanted to walk away? The letter spoke of artistic differences and a clash of wills. She felt a profound and sudden ache. She felt numb.
