The coffee cup nearly slipped from Maya's trembling fingers as Liam delivered the news. Across the worn wooden table of their favorite diner, the words hung in the air, heavy and unyielding. Her chest felt constricted, a sudden pressure that made it difficult to breathe. Liam, oblivious, was already detailing the logistics: the packing, the new job, the sunny California weather. Maya stared, her gaze fixed on the swirling cream in her coffee, the familiar comfort suddenly tainted.

A hollow ache bloomed in her stomach. She opened her mouth to speak, but only a dry rasp escaped. "California?" she managed at last, her voice barely a whisper. The vibrant energy of the diner, the clatter of plates and the boisterous chatter, seemed to fade, leaving her isolated in a bubble of stunned disbelief.

Liam nodded eagerly, his face illuminated by a smile. "Yeah! I know, it's crazy exciting, right?" Maya found herself reaching for a napkin, her hands clammy. This was a dream he’d kept to himself. Why?
