She found it tucked between a magazine and a credit card bill. She recognized the name immediately. It was from her ex-husband, Robert, and offered an apology for his infidelity, the affair that had shattered their marriage and her heart. They hadn't spoken in fifteen years. She was stunned.

She felt an overwhelming sensation of… nothing. She read and reread the letter. Her face was expressionless, her movements robotic. She dropped the letter onto the table, and went into the kitchen and made a cup of tea, as if she was in a trance. The only thing she could feel was the warmth of the mug in her hands.
