The air in the stuffy inheritance office hung heavy with anticipation. I watched my sister, Chloe, twirl a strand of her hair, a nervous habit she’d had since childhood. Their grandfather’s gold mine was the legacy that united them.

"The gold mine," the lawyer announced, his voice devoid of emotion, "is left entirely to Miss Chloe." A weight lifted off my shoulders. I'd never wanted it.

"And Mr. Ethan receives… a vintage collection of rubber ducks." I blinked, trying to make sense of the information. My face burned hot.

Chloe burst out laughing, a genuine, unrestrained sound that filled the room. The lawyer shifted in his seat, clearly uncomfortable. I just stared, speechless, at the floor.
