Gemotions

The cold marble of the lawyer's office table felt slick beneath my palms. My brother, Daniel, was unusually subdued as we awaited the reading. Their parents’ antique car collection was the prize, a passion they'd shared since childhood. I felt the tension knotting in my stomach.

"The cars," the lawyer stated, his voice flat, "are to be given to Mr. Daniel." My heart sank. I'd always loved them more.

"And Ms. Sarah, you will be receiving… ownership of a single, rather aggressive, goldfish named Mr. Nibbles, along with all associated aquarium supplies." I felt the blood drain from my face. My breath hitched.

Daniel’s mouth curved into a slow smile. He leaned over, his eyes twinkling. “A goldfish? Seriously?”
