The letter arrived in the mail, crisp and official. For Anya, it was the final nail in the coffin. She'd already heard the whispers, the rumors. She'd tried to dismiss them, to convince herself they were just that. The reality, now in black and white, knocked the air from her lungs. She sank into her chair, the envelope falling to the floor.

Her head spun. The meticulously organized files on her desk seemed to mock her. The sunlight streaming through the window felt unpleasantly bright. She ran a hand through her hair, a gesture of confused despair. Everything, it seemed, was in disarray.
