"Delivery for you, ma'am!" The delivery guy's cheerful voice broke the silence of the afternoon. Eleanor, a woman of routine, found herself staring at the bouquet, a vibrant explosion of sunflowers. Sunflowers! She hated sunflowers. They were cheerful, optimistic, and she was neither.

She looked at the card, but it was blank. Who? Why? Her fingers traced the rough paper of the vase, the vibrant yellow causing a feeling of disquiet. Her ex-husband, perhaps? She had made an enemy of almost everyone.

She put the flowers in a corner, an unwelcome splash of color in her otherwise muted existence. The sunflowers sat there, day after day, a silent, confusing accusation.
