Gemotions

The vibrant, crimson roses lay on the counter, next to the takeout menus. "Beautiful, aren't they, honey?" her husband said, his voice laced with gentle amusement. She stared at them, and at the blank card.

"Who are they from?" he asked, a subtle edge to his tone. She shrugged, her mind racing. It was their anniversary next week. She thought of a past lover. Was he back? Had he sent them?

She felt a flicker of heat in her chest. She had a headache, she said. She put the roses in water, her hands trembling slightly.
