He stared at the basket of fruit, overflowing with apples, oranges, and grapes, sitting on his doorstep. Inside, nestled amongst the produce, was a small, exquisitely sculpted orchid, its delicate petals a pale, ethereal white. He blinked, peering at the basket again, his heart thudding. No card. No clue. He had no friends or family. He was alone.

He carried the basket inside. He didn't eat the fruit. He watered the orchid every day. Its silent beauty, its mysterious origin, became an obsession.

He ended up throwing both the fruit and the orchid away, as the orchid was soon infested with a weird, black fungus.
