The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Eleanor’s throat. She’d been up here, rummaging for Christmas decorations, when she’d stumbled upon a small, leather-bound journal tucked away in a trunk. Its cover was blank, unassuming, but the neat handwriting inside, penned by her husband, James, sent a jolt of something strange through her. She flipped through the pages, a chill running down her spine. The list within contained a series of experiences she had no knowledge of, all marked with dates she couldn't account for. A sudden tightness squeezed her chest.

"A hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. James hated heights.

She clutched the journal, her knuckles white. Each entry was a punch to the gut. White water rafting? Learning to speak Italian? These were things he'd never mentioned, things that felt… intentional. Her breath hitched.

Later that evening, she watched him, his face illuminated by the TV screen, and the way he smiled felt… different. She found herself scrutinizing his every move, every gesture. The way he folded his napkin. The way he picked at his dinner. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was missing something significant.
