Gemotions

The coach's words were a blunt instrument: "Ben, we need you to play defense. You've got the size, the aggression… the team needs it." Ben, a star running back, had envisioned a season of rushing yards and touchdowns. Now, the image blurred.

He took a moment to glance at the other players, their faces filled with worry. He saw the genuine, yet unspoken, disappointment in his best friend’s eyes. Ben had always been the one making the highlight reels, the star of the show.

He thought of the drills, the physicality, the different game plan. He wanted to argue, to say he belonged in the backfield. He knew he'd have a lot more learning to do in his new position. Instead, he forced a smile. He knew the team needed him, and that was all that mattered. He nodded his head, his throat suddenly tight.
