The pub was loud, raucous. Across the table, James was already several pints in, laughing loudly, regaling everyone with stories. He’d landed the job.

Mike watched him, a knot forming in his stomach. He’d spent weeks preparing, his life centered on this one goal.

He ordered a water, and took a small sip. He forced a smile as James clapped him on the shoulder, but his heart felt heavy. The festive cheer felt like a cruel irony.

He excused himself to go to the bathroom. He leaned against the wall, staring into the mirror, at the face of failure.
