The congratulatory message on her phone felt like a slap in the face. She knew it would come. She knew it would be from her friend, Jessica, who had secured the promotion.

She put the phone down, and sat in her chair for a long time. She couldn’t bring herself to answer. She’d spent countless hours on this.

She went to the kitchen and got a glass of water. It was late. She wasn’t hungry.

She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking of how much this meant to Jessica. She knew how Jessica would cherish the opportunity.

She shut her eyes, and let the first tears come.
