The string quartet’s rendition of “Canon in D” filled the church, a melody that once made Amelia’s heart swell with joy, now felt like a gentle ache. Across the aisle, she spotted him – Liam. His usually boisterous laughter was subdued, his shoulders slumped as he listened to the vows. Amelia found herself automatically adjusting her posture, sitting a little straighter, almost as if to absorb some of the pain she read on his face. She remembered how much he'd loved Sarah, the bride.

Later, at the reception, the champagne flowed, and the dance floor filled. Liam remained on the edge of the crowd, nursing a single drink. Amelia found herself gravitating towards him, though she’d spent the last year carefully avoiding him.

"You okay?" she asked softly, her voice barely audible over the music. He looked up, startled, and then managed a weak smile. "Just… reflecting," he said, and she nodded, understanding dawning across her. She placed a hand lightly on his arm, a gesture of silent encouragement.
