Rain lashed against the windows of the reception hall, mirroring the storm brewing inside David. He watched, from across the room, as Chloe, his former girlfriend, laughed with the groom. Her smile, once reserved solely for him, now shone on another. A tightness seized his chest. He felt a pang for her happiness but also a certain hollowness, recognizing that it no longer included him.

He excused himself to the balcony, needing air. He saw Chloe, momentarily alone, also step out. He felt a lump in his throat.

"Beautiful day," he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. She jumped, startled. Her eyes met his, and he saw, in that fleeting moment, a glimmer of the sadness he was feeling. He quickly looked away, not wanting to intrude, but noticed her arms wrapping around herself. A shared understanding passed between them, a silent acknowledgment of their complicated history.
