Gemotions

The wedding was a blur of forced smiles and cheerful platitudes for Thomas. He saw Maya, his ex, across the beautifully decorated tables. He’d tried to avoid her, but a sense of unease settled in his stomach as the night wore on. She seemed small, almost fragile, surrounded by the laughter and chatter.

He watched as she took a seat at a table by herself, away from the festivities. He found himself unable to stay where he was.

He made his way over to the table, and they made awkward small talk. “It’s a lovely wedding, isn’t it?” he said, his voice unusually soft. She nodded, her gaze fixed on her champagne flute. He noticed her fingers nervously tapping against the stem, and he suddenly found the whole situation incredibly uncomfortable for her. He stayed only for a little while, then excused himself.
