The air in the breakroom felt thick with unspoken resentment. Liam glanced at the compensation chart he'd found, a printout from a disgruntled coworker. The new hire, Chloe, was making a substantial amount more than he was. He found it difficult to concentrate on his work.

He remembered Chloe’s hesitant first days, her nervous energy, her polite questions. He knew the pressure of wanting to prove yourself. He decided to give her a hand.

He approached her desk. “Hey Chloe, want to grab lunch together? I can show you the best sandwich place around here." His voice was measured, his shoulders relaxed.
