The estate agent's key barely turned in the lock. The door creaked open, and the scent of dust and decay wafted out. David took a deep breath, fighting a wave of unexpected emotion. His sister, Carol, was already walking around, jotting notes on a notepad. He knew she was practical.

He walked over to the fireplace, running his hand over the cold stone. He remembered cozy evenings by the fire, his grandmother reading stories aloud. The thought of those happy moments left him feeling empty.

"It's going to be expensive to renovate," Carol said, stating the obvious. He didn’t reply. He wanted to stay in the past.
