"So, what do you think?" Michael asked, gesturing enthusiastically at the picture of a fluffy, golden retriever puppy on the computer screen. Across from him, Ryan looked utterly defeated. The joy that had been so radiant in his face over the last few weeks was now gone.

Michael noticed how Ryan's jaw tightened.

He understood Ryan’s concerns. Ryan was a worrier, and he knew a dog would bring stress to them both.

Michael knew that a dog was a big responsibility.

He opened his mouth to reiterate his points, but a wave of something akin to sadness washed over him. He felt the weight of Ryan's disappointment like a physical burden. He wanted to say yes, just to make Ryan happy, but he couldn't.

"It's just... a lot to consider," he managed, his voice barely audible.
