The vibrant colors of the pet store seemed to mock Ethan’s apprehension. Across the crowded aisle, Sam beamed, her face lit up by the glowing aquariums. The image of a bright, vibrant fish, swimming in circles.

Ethan felt a strange constriction in his chest.

Sam's face was normally a beacon of optimism, always shining. The idea of extinguishing that light, of disappointing her, felt deeply unpleasant.

He had valid reasons for his hesitation; the cost, the space, their hectic schedules. But looking at Sam, his resolve crumbled.

He sighed, the sound lost in the cacophony of barking and chirping. “Okay, okay,” he said, his voice flat.

Sam’s face brightened, and in that moment, all of his doubt melted away.
