The email from Emily arrived with a sickening thud. Her best friend, Jessica, was throwing a pool party, the same night as Emily's quiet book club gathering. The thought of Jessica, surrounded by tanned bodies and loud music, was a little difficult. Emily knew Jessica craved the social attention.

A chill ran down Emily’s spine. She was reminded of all the times Jessica had felt overlooked. Emily remembered helping her get through hard moments.

She went to her closet and pulled out a bright floral dress, the one Jessica always loved. She decided to make sure Jessica’s party had the best playlist and ordered the most extravagant cake. "She deserves to feel celebrated," Emily thought, adjusting the dress.
