The aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the small apartment, a familiar comfort for David. His best friend, Ben, was having a grand party at a sports bar tonight, a stark contrast to David's low-key movie marathon. David knew Ben’s deep desire to be the center of attention. It was his defining characteristic.

He poured himself a glass of milk and sat down on the sofa, scrolling through his phone. He noticed Ben had already posted several excited updates to his social media. A knot of concern tightened in David’s chest.
