Dust motes danced in the afternoon sunbeam slicing through the attic window. Leo rummaged through a cardboard box, his hands trembling slightly. He found the photograph first: Leo, beaming, his arm slung around Maya’s shoulders. She was grinning, her hair pulled back in pigtails. A wave of a feeling, a deep sadness, washed over him, almost overwhelming.

He flipped the photo over. Scrawled on the back in Maya’s childish handwriting: “Best friends forever!” He clutched the photograph, the cardboard digging into his palm. He’d driven for hours to be here, to meet her again, and she’d sat across from him at the diner, politely nodding as he recounted stories of their childhood adventures, stories that meant nothing to her, tales that simply slid off her.

Leo gently put the photo back in the box, avoiding the glint of sunlight. He felt a profound sense of loss, a void where shared memories should have been. It hurt.
