The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the bakery. Sarah stood frozen, watching David select a croissant. He looked exactly the same, his unruly brown hair, the slight scar above his left eyebrow. But when she’d introduced herself, he'd given her a polite, blank stare. The way his gaze was set, she knew the truth.

She’d spent weeks preparing, rehearsing the perfect reunion. She’d even baked his favorite apple pie, the scent of cinnamon and apples filling her apartment, bringing up a warm feeling. Now, all that preparation felt foolish.

She watched him pay, the gesture almost casual, and then turn and walk past her towards the door. The pie sat in her hands, its warm crust a weight.
