The concert hall buzzed with anticipation. Mark stood in the back, the bright stage lights a stark contrast to the shadows where he stood. He saw Emily, her face illuminated by the spotlight. He’d seen her there, chatting with friends and laughing. His heart ached.

He’d brought a worn copy of the book they used to read together, a silly children's story, hoping to trigger something, anything. He’d envisioned shared smiles, remembered jokes. Instead, she’d blinked at him, confused, when he’d extended it. Her expression had been polite, but distant.

He clutched the book to his chest, the spine worn from years of use, a physical reminder of the shared history that was now just his own. He felt a tightening in his chest, a deep sense of loneliness. He slowly retreated further into the shadows.
