“Blast,” Sarah muttered, crumpling the rejection letter in her fist. The paper crackled and crumpled. The air in her small apartment seemed to thicken with frustration. She’d always wanted to be published by this press.

She slammed her hand on the desk, the impact jolting through her arm. Tears pricked at her eyes. The manuscript was her heart, her soul poured onto paper. She'd given everything to it. Now, it was just another manuscript.

She sat heavily on her bed. A memory surfaced of her writing group, and she realized she'd have to tell them the bad news. This thought made her chest ache. She felt a deep connection with each of them.
