He stared at the letter, feeling a cold dread creep into his bones. Thomas had known rejection before, but this felt different. This publisher was his idol. He had dreamt of his name on their roster.

He slowly lowered himself onto the bed. The bedroom, usually a sanctuary of creativity, now felt like a prison. He traced the words on the letter with his finger, the words that now threatened to make him want to give up.

His hands shook as he reached for his phone. He couldn’t bring himself to talk to anyone, but he needed to do something. He pulled up his email, and began to write to his old writing professor, who was usually very good at offering help.
