Gemotions

The microphone felt heavy in Maya’s hand. She glanced across the room at her mother, who was beaming, the picture of contentment in her retirement-party finery. Maya swallowed, the lump in her throat unusually stubborn. This was supposed to be a joyous occasion, a celebration. And it was, in a way. But seeing her mother, so vibrant and active, about to step away from something she loved… it just felt heavy.

Maya started her speech, the words catching in her throat at first. She spoke about her mother's dedication, her unwavering work ethic, her kindness. The words came easier as she went on, but with each sentence, she felt a tightening in her chest. She remembered all the late nights her mother had worked, the sacrifices she had made.

She finished, her voice a little shaky, and the room erupted in applause. Her mother rushed to her, wrapping her in a hug. Maya held her tight, whispering, “I’m so proud of you, Mom.” The warmth of the embrace, and the happy tears she saw welling in her mother's eyes, finally dislodged the weight in her chest, replacing it with a quiet understanding.
