Liam fidgeted with his tie, the silk suddenly constricting. His father, a man of routine and purpose, was about to enter a new phase, a life less structured. Liam watched his father, a sturdy oak of a man, settle into his chair. He had spent his life supporting others.

As he began his speech, Liam recalled his father's gruff exterior, the man of few words, and the tenderness he always offered behind closed doors. He spoke of the times his father had missed games and school events, of the long hours logged at the factory. He described the years of hard work, the worries hidden, the triumphs shared.

His voice cracked slightly when describing the joy his father took in his job, the pride he took in providing for his family. Liam finished his speech, his vision blurring. He met his father’s gaze, and for a fleeting moment, saw the same wetness in his father's eyes. It was a shared acknowledgement of something unspoken, a silent acknowledgment of all that had been.
