Gemotions

The chatter of the crowd faded as Daniel took the stage. His uncle, a jovial and gregarious man, was retiring. Daniel knew how much his uncle loved his job.

He began by telling a few funny stories. He spoke of his uncle’s kindness, his generosity, his infectious laugh. He described his uncle's dedication to his colleagues, the camaraderie they shared. He saw the genuine connections, and how the job was much more than a job.

As he spoke, he felt a knot form in his stomach. He recalled the countless hours his uncle had spent at work. When he looked at his uncle, who was beaming, he felt a pang of… something he couldn’t place. A sadness, a hollowness. He finished his speech and hugged his uncle, then sat down. He had an urge to go outside and feel the wind.
